Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been affected by the recent 7.8 earthquake, especially those in Kaikoura, North Canterbury and Marlborough. We feel for those with love who are recovering and clearing up following the earthquake and those who are anxious in the face of possible future quakes.
We are mindful of Pope Francis’ message to the recent World Humanitarian Summit where he reminded us to allocate the suffering “through severe solidarity and a true, profound respect for the rights and dignity of those suffering.”
MUFTI DAY 30 NOVEMBER – Gold Coin Donation As we know, Kaikoura is the area most affected therefore we will be having a mufti day next Wednesday for St Joseph’s School Kaikoura to help them with relief efforts after the earthquake. All children are to come dressed in mufti clothes (not school uniform) and give a gold coin donation.
PRAYER after an earthquake Creator God, at times such as this, when we realised that the ground beneath our feet is not as solid as we imagined, we plead for your mercy. As the things we have built crumble we know too well how small we truly are on this ever-changing, ever-moving, fragile planet we call home. Yet you have promised never to forget us. Do not forget us now. Today, so many people are afraid. They wait in fear for the next tremor. Comfort them O God, in this disaster. Be their rock when the earth refuses to stand still, and shelter them under your wings when homes and offices no longer exist. Pierce too, our hearts with compassion, we who watch from afar, as our friends and relatives experience misery upon misery. Move us to act swiftly this day, to give generously every day, to work for justice always, and to pray increasingly for those without hope. And once the shaking has ceased, the images of destruction have stopped filling the news, and our thoughts return to lifes daily rumblings, let us not forget that we are all your children and they, out sisters and brothers. We are all the work of your hands. For the mountains leave their place and the hills be tossed to the ground, you shall never leave us and your promise of peace will never be shaken. ISAIAH 54.10 adapted by Diane Macalintal

STRINGS MUSIC PROGRAMME 2017Sancta Maria College would love to get a small string group underway in each feeder school (Sancta Maria Primary, Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Mark’s).
Each group would be for violin and cello and have approximately six to eight players.
Colour Strings is a violin and cello system developed in Finland to “set-up” well rounded musicians based on the Kodaly methodology of music. Whilst the programme is aimed at years 1 and 2, we would like some years 3, 4 and 5 to start playing, so that over the next 2 or 3 years they can go to Sancta Maria College (SMC) ready to join their Orchestra. Students will have weekly individual and group lessons promoting self-confidence and well being. Students will progress through four stages/books over two years and will be able to join the orchestra or play in ensembles by the second half of their second year.
Students from all schools (including SMC) would aim to give a concert toward the end of the year to build collegiality.
Cost $30 per week invoiced per term + cost of books. Please see the school office for more information or enrolment forms.
